Signs of Hearing Loss

Page Content

Hearing loss occurs gradually. So it’s not unusual for people to accommodate and ignore the signs. If you answer yes to more than two or three of the following, it would be a good idea to get your hearing tested.

Social Signs:

  • I ask people to repeat themselves frequently.
  • I have difficulty following conversations involving more than two people.
  • It often sounds like other people are mumbling.
  • I avoid restaurants, malls, or crowded meetings because I know I’ll have trouble hearing.
  • I have more trouble hearing women and children than men.
  • I sometimes stay home alone because I’m nervous about hearing people if I go out.

Emotional Signs:

  • I can’t understand what people are saying if they’re not facing me.
  • I feel stressed from straining to hear and understand.
  • I feel annoyed at other people when I can’t hear them.
  • I am nervous about meeting new people because I’m afraid I won’t understand them.
  • I withdraw from social situations when I can’t hear.

Medical Signs:

  • I have constant ringing in my ears.
  • I have a family history of hearing loss.
  • I take medication that can harm my hearing (ototoxic drugs).
  • I have diabetes, heart, circulation or thyroid problems.
  • I’ve been exposed to very loud sounds over a prolonged period of time.
