Hearing Aid Cleaning and Care

Caring for your hearing aids is easy. Follow these general guidelines for the best results:

  • Store your hearing aids in the same location every night to ensure they aren’t lost. This should be a dry, cool place — preferably not bathroom, because the humidity level is too high.
  • Wipe the hearing aids gently each morning to remove the wax, oil and debris that has dried overnight.
  • Avoid using hair spray, makeup or perfume around your hearing aids because the microphone could become blocked.
  • If you are not going to use your hearing aids for long period of time, turn them off, take the batteries out, and store in a cool, dry place.

Cleaning and care: In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aids

  • Brush the microphone cover with the brush provided by your Miracle-Ear consultant, or a soft bristle toothbrush.
  • Use a wax pick to remove any wax in the receiver tube.

Cleaning and care: Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids

  • Brush the microphone cover with the brush provided by your Miracle-Ear consultant, or a soft bristle toothbrush.
  • For a slim-tube hearing aid, twist the tube off and slide a cleaning pipe down the tube from the part that connects to the hearing aid to the tip that goes in the ear.
  • To remove wax from the earmold, use the wax pick provided. If the earmold needs additional cleaning, remove it from the tube and clean with soapy water. Dry the earmold completely and use a tube blower to force any extra water out.
