Miracle-Ear Chief Medical Officer Dr. Thomas Tedeschi answers some of your common hearing-related questions.

Q: I recently upgraded to new Miracle-Ear hearing aids. I’m really looking forward to experiencing new technology, but I’m also a little apprehensive because I’m so used to my old hearing aids. Do you have any tips for helping me make a smooth transition?

A: Congratulations on the upgrade, and I hope you enjoy many happy conversations with your new hearing aids! Now, as for your concern, this is perfectly normal. It’s a little bit like buying a new car — you have to get used to a different feel, handling and technologies. But pretty soon you love your new ride. Here are four things you can do to transition smoothly to your new hearing aids:

Be Realistic

Similar to a new car, your new hearing aids will perform at a higher level and will come with more advanced features than your old hearing aids. While it will take time to adapt, you can make the process easier by keeping reasonable expectations. Remember that you will need time to adapt to the sound of your hearing aids, and this may take some time. Also, remember that no hearing aid can completely fix every communication issue.

Be Consistent

Wearing your new hearing aids throughout the day will help your brain adjust more quickly to the new sounds you’re experiencing; this process is called adaptation. By contrast, if you wear your new hearing aids sporadically or switch back and forth between your old and new hearing aids, it will be harder and take longer for adaptation to occur.

Be Flexible

Chances are, your new hearing aids have multiple listening programs. Also, you may be able to take advantage of new features, such as streaming audio from your smartphone and TV. Experiment with the programs and features in different listening situations to find out what works best for you.
