Types of Hearing Loss
Our hearing aid center can assess your current level of hearing loss and help you understand your situation. We’re able to treat the most common type of hearing loss, including sensorineural, conductive, and mixed. With sensorineural hearing loss, there is a problem in the inner ear or the pathway that travels between the ears and brain. It’s the most common type of hearing loss, and it typically occurs as the result of age, infection, or noise exposure.
Conductive hearing loss is a decrease in hearing caused by an obstruction in the outer or middle ear. Causes include wax in the ear canal, perforation of the ear drum, or fluid in the middle ear. Surgery is typically required to correct this problem. With mixed hearing loss, both types of loss are present.
Signs of Hearing Loss
In the case of conductive hearing loss, you may notice the difference immediately, but this isn’t the case with sensorineural loss. This type of damage tends to set in slowly, but it will continue to progress if left untreated. Early warning signs to watch for include:
- Having difficulty following conversations between multiple people
- Asking people to repeat themselves
- Struggling to understand children and women more than men
- Avoiding social situations due to hearing challenges
