Harley's Hero

Published on Dec, 05, 2018

When Crystal Peterson learned something wasn’t right with her son’s hearing, she didn’t know what to do. He needed hearing aids but knew she couldn’t afford them. That’s when Miracle-Ear Foundation and the Miracle-Ear of Grand Rapids, MN came to the rescue. Harley was given brand new hearing aids, free of cost, from the Foundation’s Gift of Sound™ program.

Hearing Instrument Specialist Jordan Gran has now been working with Harley for five years and they’ve formed an amazing bond. “I remember the first time that Harley came in to our office,” said Jordan. “He was very shy and hid behind his mother as much as he could. Now when he comes in to our office, I brace myself as I hear his footsteps running down the hallway before he jumps up and gives me a hug. Throughout our first few appointments, it was difficult for him to verbalize how he was doing and any issues he was having. It has been wonderful to see his confidence grow over the past few years, and how he is more engaged in every appointment. It is also amazing to see how he has continued to improve in his reading and vocabulary in school, as well.”

As much as hearing loss affects adults, it can have an immense impact on a child’s speech and language development, as well as affect their social and emotional involvement.  “Miracle-Ear has helped Harley tremendously with his hearing,” says Harley’s mother, Crystal. “He has improved greatly and keeps improving because of the wonderful provider he has. Jordan from Miracle-Ear has taken Harley under his wings and makes sure he is always taken care of. Jordan goes above and beyond for Harley. He is not just a Hearing Care Professional, but Jordan has become family to us. Without the Miracle-Ear Foundation’s help, Harley would be struggling with everyday living.”

The feeling is definitely mutual. ”Over the past five years, Harley has become more than a patient. He is a friend, and more importantly, family,” says Jordan. "I have had the privilege of seeing him grow and mature, through his interactions with others, his continued progress with school, and his dedication to wrestling. Being able to see his development over the past five years has been extremely gratifying, and I cannot wait to see what the next five years looks like, as well!”
