Video otoscopy for your hearing health

At Miracle-Ear, every hearing consultation begins with a thorough understanding of your ear health.

What is video otoscopy?

Video otoscopy is a quick, non-invasive diagnostic procedure that uses a small high-resolution camera to examine the ear canal and eardrum in real time. Unlike a traditional otoscope, which only the clinician can look through, video otoscopy displays a magnified image on a screen so both you and your hearing care professional can clearly see what is happening inside your ear in real time.

As part of a comprehensive hearing test at select Miracle-Ear stores, video otoscopy works alongside advanced diagnostic technology and our hearing test to provide a clearer and more complete picture of your hearing. By combining detailed ear imaging with personalized hearing assessments, your hearing care professional can recommend solutions tailored to your unique hearing needs, lifestyle and long-term hearing goals.

What can video otoscopy reveal?

The ear canal is a narrow, curved structure that is impossible to examine without specialized equipment. Video otoscopy gives our hearing care professionals a clear, magnified view of what is happening inside — and what they find directly influences the care they recommend.

The most common findings include:

  • Earwax buildup. Earwax is a natural and necessary substance, but when it accumulates in excess it can block the ear canal, muffle sound, and interfere with how a hearing aid sits and performs. Identifying buildup early allows it to be addressed before it affects your hearing or your device.
  • Obstructions. Foreign material or debris in the ear canal can affect sound transmission and cause discomfort. Video otoscopy identifies obstructions that would otherwise go undetected during a standard examination.
  • Ear canal condition. The shape, size, and condition of the ear canal vary significantly from one individual to the next. Narrowing, inflammation, or anatomical variations can all affect how a hearing aid fits physically — and how it delivers sound. Knowing this in advance allows the fitting to be planned accordingly.
  • Eardrum visibility. While video otoscopy at Miracle-Ear is not a diagnostic medical procedure, a clear view of the eardrum can indicate whether a referral to a physician is appropriate before proceeding with a hearing aid fitting.

When should you get a video otoscopy?

Video otoscopy is relevant at several points in a patient's hearing care journey — not only at the first appointment.

  • Before your first hearing aid fitting.
The condition of the ear canal directly affects how a hearing aid sits, seals, and performs. A video otoscopy examination prior to fitting ensures there are no obstructions or anatomical factors that could compromise the outcome.
  • If your hearing aid is underperforming.
A device that was working well and has gradually become less effective may be affected by earwax accumulation around the receiver or in the canal. A visual inspection can identify the cause quickly and without guesswork.
  • If your ear feels blocked or muffled.
A sensation of fullness, muffled hearing, or reduced sound clarity on one side is often associated with earwax buildup or an obstruction. Video otoscopy provides an immediate, visual answer.
  • As part of your routine hearing health check.
Even in the absence of symptoms, a periodic visual inspection of the ear canal is a straightforward way to monitor ear health and address any buildup before it becomes a problem.

Video otoscopy and hearing aid fitting

An accurate hearing aid fitting depends on more than an audiogram. The physical condition of the ear canal is equally important — and equally variable from one patient to the next.

Undetected earwax buildup can compromise the acoustic seal between the hearing aid and the ear canal, reducing the effectiveness of amplification and introducing feedback. Anatomical variations in canal shape or size may require adjustments to the style or fit of the device that would not be apparent without a visual examination. In some cases, the presence of inflammation or other findings may indicate that a medical consultation is warranted before a fitting proceeds.

By incorporating video otoscopy into the consultation process, Miracle-Ear hearing care professionals ensure that every fitting decision is informed by a complete picture of the patient's ear.

FAQs about video otoscopy

Yes. Video otoscopy is a non-invasive procedure. The camera is gently inserted into the outer portion of the ear canal and does not come into contact with the eardrum. No preparation is required, and the examination can be performed as part of a standard hearing test.

For most adults, a yearly video otoscopy as part of a hearing check-up is a smart way to stay on top of your ear health. We also recommend booking an appointment whenever you notice changes in your hearing, a feeling of blocked ears, recurring earwax issues or discomfort with your current hearing aids.

A video otoscopy examination typically takes between five and ten minutes. It is usually performed at the beginning of a hearing test, before any audiometric testing or fitting assessment takes place.
