Bluetooth

What is Bluetooth?

Wireless communication is so common today that we don't think much about it. That doesn't mean it's any less valuable! Bluetooth is a radio-wave technology designed to communicate over short distances. It's a simple way for cell phones, printers, PCs, digital cameras, and other gadgets (like hearing aids) to link together over relatively short distances using wireless technology.

Hearing aids

What are Bluetooth hearing aids?

Similarly to a smartphone connecting to a television or speaker, Bluetooth hearing aids wirelessly communicate with other Bluetooth-enabled devices by transmitting signals between the two devices. Hearing aids can connect to almost any audio-producing technology with Bluetooth capabilities, including smartphones, laptops, music players or your television.

Features

How Bluetooth hearing aids work

Pair your hearing aids to other Bluetooth-enabled devices, and you can stream sound from your TV, phone or computer directly to your hearing aid—no intermediary device needed. With Bluetooth hearing aids, you can easily listen to your favorite tunes while jogging or hear your grandkids giggle on FaceTime. Look for the Bluetooth symbol, usually found in a device's settings, and make sure it's turned on. Then, you should be able to find your hearing aid listed as a compatible device and simply click to connect it.

Bluetooth hearing aid benefits

Hearing aids with Bluetooth can create a truly seamless experience with your other technology. Here are some of the benefits of bluetooth hearing aids:

One of the key benefits of Bluetooth hearing aids is the ability to remotely control your hearing aids. Rather than adjusting the volume or programs manually on the device, you can change the volume or program by using a remote control or the Miracle-Ear app on your smartphone. Not only does this feature allow you to adjust small hearing aids more easily but it can also make adjusting hearing aids in public more discreet.

When watching television, you might have a different volume preference than others watching with you. While hearing aids will likely change the way you hear and what you consider to be a comfortable sound range, Bluetooth enabled hearing aids eliminate any potential issues that could arise.

Instead of compromising with others in the room about what’s too quiet or too loud, you can set the TV volume at a personal level for your hearing aids, and it can be different than the volume coming from the television speaker. You also have the option to stream sound to just one hearing aid instead of both. Bluetooth hearing aids are an excellent way to enjoy your favorite movies and shows without sound distortion, creating the best listening experience for your needs.

To fully enjoy the possibilities Bluetooth has to offer, most hearing aids allow you to pair with multiple Bluetooth-enabled devices and switch between them as needed. For example, you can switch your hearing aids’ connection from the TV to your cell phone if it rings while you’re watching TV. This allows you to listen to any audio source seamlessly throughout the course of your day without the need to connect with a completely new device.

You can find instructions for how to connect hearing aids to Bluetooth and how to connect hearing aids to a TV via Bluetooth.

Bluetooth takes your smartphone experience to the next level, making it easy to talk and listen on your smartphone. With Bluetooth hearing aids, there’s no need to hold your smartphone up to your ear. Since you’re getting sound delivered directly into your hearing aids, it’s easier to enjoy the conversation and understand the person speaking on the other end.

In addition to modern hearing aids including more technological features than traditional analog hearing aids, hearing aids are more discreet than ever. Miracle-Ear offers several sizes and models that feature powerful Bluetooth technology while still being incredibly discreet. This includes completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids and receiver-in-canal (RIC) hearing aids.

Behind-the-ear hearing aids are slightly more visible, as they have larger tubing and the receiver of the hearing aid is housed behind the ears rather than in the ear canal. Choosing which of these designs is best for you will depend on your specific degree of hearing loss and your fit preference.

Regardless of which style you choose, the benefits of Bluetooth hearing aids are that they can be connected and controlled through the Miracle-Ear app, making them easy to use and adjust as needed while still maintaining your privacy around your hearing loss.

If you enjoy going for walks while listening to music, you might be used to wearing earbuds or headphones. Hearing aids with Bluetooth eliminate the need to use headphones or a separate Bluetooth headset for hearing aid wearers, since the sound plays directly into your hearing aid.

You won’t have to worry about trying to wear headphones in addition to your hearing aids, and you won’t have to deal with a cord getting in your way. With Bluetooth, you can think of your hearing aids as a wireless earbuds.

Though natural sounds are picked up by the hearing aid from their origin without the need for Bluetooth, the best Bluetooth hearing aids stream sound straight from a technology source into your ear. This means that when you’re watching television or using the computer, the data will immediately transfer to your hearing aid from the monitor using radio waves.

Stay connected with Bluetooth hearing aids

You may already be familiar with Bluetooth technology, which allows us to connect two electronic devices without using a cord. Using Bluetooth for hearing aids is just like using the Bluetooth feature that lets us connect an MP3 player to a speaker—it’s easy and convenient.

While it’s no surprise that hearing aids help us hear many sounds around us, Bluetooth hearing aid technology simplifies sound reception from audio sources by relaying sound directly to the hearing aid from the device.

FAQ: Bluetooth hearing aids

With the power of Bluetooth capabilities, you can connect your hearing aids to a wide range of gadgets. While each specific device may have its own methods for how to connect hearing aids to Bluetooth, try these basic steps to connect the two devices:

  • Ensure that Bluetooth is turned on for both the hearing aids and the device you want to connect to. This can be checked in the settings of your device and in the app for your hearing aids.
  • Navigate to your device’s list of nearby Bluetooth-enabled technology. You should see the name of your hearing aids appear under nearby devices.
  • From the list of devices, select your hearing aids to begin the pairing process. It may take a minute to properly pair. Your device should indicate a connection with your hearing aids once the pairing is complete.
  • Test the Bluetooth connection by playing a song or making a call. Repeat the pairing process if you’re unable to hear through your hearing aids.

Bluetooth can also help you connect your hearing aids directly to your smart TV and avoid any arguments over volume. Review your TV’s specific instruction for how to pair a device like your hearing aids, but these basic steps can provide direction for how to connect hearing aids to TV via Bluetooth:

  • Check to make sure that both your hearing aids and the TV have their Bluetooth connectivity capabilities turned on. You may need to turn off and turn back on your hearing aids to activate the Bluetooth technology.
  • On your television’s list of available Bluetooth devices, select the name of your hearing aids.
  • Keep your hearing aids near the TV during the pairing process. It may take a few minutes to fully complete the pairing.

If the TV itself doesn’t have Bluetooth capabilities, consider adding a TV streamer. This compact device can act as a bridge between your hearing aids and the TV, allowing you to stream audio directly to your hearing aids. Simply connect your hearing aids via Bluetooth to the streamer and enjoy high-quality audio and personalized volume settings for your favorite movies or TV shows, right in your ears.

It’s well known that hearing aids are not inexpensivethe average hearing aid price falls between $1,000 to $5,000. While this number might seem high, at Miracle-Ear this cost reflects not only the hearing aids themselves but also lifetime aftercare, a three-year warranty and all the advanced technology that’s built into the devices—including Bluetooth.

Technology is one of the key factors that influences the price of hearing aids: the more advanced features housed in the device, the higher the price tag will likely be. While it may be tempting to opt for a device with less technology to lower cost, these features help make your hearing aid a seamless, supportive addition to your daily routine and hearing experience. Bluetooth is one example of the technology that could affect the price of your hearing aid, as well as rechargeable batteries, direct streaming, tinnitus controls, voice recognition and directional microphones.

Because Bluetooth operates on radio frequencies to transmit signals between two devices, there may be some trepidation around the safety of using Bluetooth hearing aids. However, the frequency level used by Bluetooth technology is too low to harm the human body and it emits less radiation than other pieces of modern technology. It is a very safe technology that can connect and use numerous devices, including your hearing aids.

However, despite the technology's safety, Bluetooth hearing aid wearers should still exercise caution when using the devices. Monitor the volume of content played over your hearing aids, as listening too loudly can negatively affect the sensitive hair cells of the inner ear and cause further damage to your hearing. Protect yourself by avoiding excessive listening at high volume.
