Did you recently get a mailer offering a free set of listening ears if you visit Miracle-Ear for a hearing exam? You may be wondering, “What is a free set of listening ears?” Listening ears are a style of amplification devices that wirelessly connect to your television to make listening to and watching the TV easier. In this blog, learn more about these products, as well as what else you can expect at a Miracle-Ear hearing appointment.
At a Miracle-Ear appointment, you’ll receive more than just a free hearing exam. When you arrive, the store team will greet you and help you get settled. Your hearing care professional (HCP) will guide you back to the exam room and take the time to get to know your health and hearing history. Then, they’ll conduct a physical exam where they look inside your ears.
From there, your HCP will conduct a hearing threshold test and a speech discrimination test, which will measure your level of hearing loss, which includes the softest sounds you can hear and your ability to hear and understand speech.
After your hearing test is complete, your HCP will talk you through your results. If you have hearing loss, they’ll discuss your treatment options and what hearing aids might be a good fit. If the Miracle-Ear store you’re visiting is running a free listening ears promotion, you’ll also receive your free set of listening ears at the end of the appointment.
Miracle-Ear stores sometimes run promotions that include product giveaways when you come in for a hearing test. One example is listening ears, a simple amplification product that can be used to magnify the sounds of TV or music. Similar to over-the-ear headphones, listening ears can be wirelessly connected to a transmitter, which is plugged into your television. It’s a simple and convenient way to better hear your favorite TV show or movie, without turning the volume way up.
Listening ears from Miracle-Ear* are suitable for people with and without hearing loss. For those without hearing loss, listening ears can simply help you watch the television without distraction, or watch without disturbing others in your household. For those with hearing loss, listening ears are a great way to watch TV, solo or with a loved one, without having to turn the volume up super loud.
Assistive listening devices (ALDs), also called assistive listening systems (ALSs), are a broad category of devices used to amplify sound and eliminate background noise. Listening ears are part of this product category, and so are remote microphones, headphones enabled with Auracast or t-coil technology, and other personal sound amplification products (PSAPs).
ALDs, including listening ears, are not a replacement for hearing aids for those with hearing loss. While they’re designed to amplify certain sounds—whether that’s a conversation partner’s voice, the PA system of a public space, the television, or just the voices and sounds around you—they are neither federally regulated as medical devices, nor do they have the customized, selective amplification capabilities of prescription hearing aids.
Listening ears are primarily used to amplify the sound of a television, delivering the audio directly into your ears via the listening ears device. So, you’ll generally use them in your own home, wherever you like to watch TV.
For those with mild hearing loss or those who simply want to eliminate ambient distractions, listening ears offer the benefit of watching TV without having to crank up the volume. Users will get TV audio streamed right into their listening ear headphones, so they don’t miss anything on the show or movie they’re watching. Your family will love it too—since listening ears don’t take over the TV’s sound system, they can still watch the television with you, watching at a volume that’s comfortable to them.
